- Disc degeneration and how it happens -

Disc degeneration may cause no symptoms, or the pain may be so intense that the individual cannot continue with their daily activities. The condition starts with damage to the spine, but in time, symptoms can affect other parts of the body. Symptoms usually get worse with age.

Degeneration occurs because of age-related wear-and-tear on a spinal disc, and may be accelerated by injury, health and lifestyle factors, and possibly by genetic predisposition to joint pain or musculoskeletal disorders. Degenerative disc disease rarely starts from a major trauma such as a car accident.

As a disc degenerates, small bony outgrowths (bone spurs) may form at the edges of the affected vertebrae. These bone spurs may pinch (compress) the spinal nerves, leading to weakness or numbness in the arms or legs.

When degeneration occurs to this point, we will be happy to help correct and maintain your spine, so you can live a healthy life. Even before degeneration occurs to a sever point, South Denver Spine can mitigate further damage and help you live a pain-free lifestyle.
